Welcome to Our Committee (and our expectations)!

 Hi delegates!

We are so excited to welcome you to BMUN 72 and the DISEC committee.

In this committee, you will be working to develop multi-faceted  and thoughtful solutions to address both the driving forces and the damage of long-term conflicts. Our first topic addresses Vigilante Violence in Global Conflicts. Our second topic addresses Climate Conflict in Africa.

This blog will act as our committee’s more informal avenue for discussion and communication before the conference– and we’d love to see you interact with it! The purpose of this blog is to (1) allow you to actively engage with the content of this committee and (2) give you all the opportunity to learn about other countries’ policies before the debate actually starts. You can post comments on posts that we make and write about literally anything relevant to the topics at hand! For example, if you’ve found follow-up content or research you’d like to share, would like to discuss your country’s opinion on the topic, or have other ideas in mind, this blog is the place for that! Please write from the perspective of the country that you are representing.

The official DISEC committee page can be found here, where you can find our executive summary, synopsis, and the link to this blog.

Here, I will also touch on some important guidelines and expectations as you start your research:

Position Papers

We highly recommend taking advantage of the synopsis as the starting point in your research. It may be really long (sorry), but we promise that it’s a digestible read; plus, a good portion of it is images and citations.

DISEC will use the standard, default position paper format. Position papers are due on February 18th to be considered for the Research Award, and February 25th to be considered for any committee award. Please reach out to us if you need more time, and we would be happy to grant an extension (no later than March 1st).

Procedure Guide

DISEC will be using standard BMUN/MUN procedure.

If you have any questions about the topics, the procedure, your position paper, or BMUN in general, please don’t hesitate to contact us at disec72@bmun.org

Good luck with your research! We’re so excited for BMUN 72!

Best,

Chloe Zitsow

Head Chair of DISEC, BMUN 72

  2. DISEC - Jordan Country Policy

Dear fellow delegates and esteemed chairs, we are representing the delegation of Jordan in the upcoming DISEC committee in BMUN 72. We look forward to collaborating with other delegations who share our vision and objectives to achieve a unanimous solution for the topic challenges ahead. This post includes our country's policy regarding vigilante violence and climate conflicts in Africa.

Vigilantism is often linked to the economic insecurity of a government and its institutions, which drives individuals to take matters into their own hands. Jordan has a nuanced approach to vigilante activities, combining martial and diplomatic measures. The country has provided assistance to the Haitian National Police through the United Nations Mission for Justice Support in Haiti to counteract vigilante threats and stabilize the region. Similarly, the Jordanian government has demonstrated a firm stance against Israeli vigilantes, particularly in light of the recent escalation of the conflict.

It is essential to consider that vigilante justice undermines the rule of law and democracy. It is the responsibility of the state to ensure that justice is served impartially and fairly, and therefore, citizens should trust in the legal system to provide justice.

The global ecosystems are presently encountering a scarcity of basic resources such as water supply, livestock, and natural gasses and oils. Additionally, the impact of climate change on the social and economic aspects of global society has led to increased competition for limited resources and higher costs due to damaged infrastructure and the strain on human health. The regions with the lowest economic status, such as the African continent, are particularly vulnerable to the repercussions of climate change. Jordan has established long-standing policies regarding their climatic conditions, including extreme drought and desertification. The delegation has worked extensively over the years to prioritize the construction of surface water resources and the treatment of wastewater, which is generated and then discharged into surface water reservoirs across the nation.

While most of the provisions outlined in the irrigation policy are being followed, there is a need for additional measures to be implemented to optimize the benefits of irrigation water and increase the social returns on its use. By implementing and improving these policies and regulations, the country can work towards achieving sustainable water resource management and ensuring the equitable distribution of resources among its citizens and other regions.
